Summary

Preserved on a single surviving manuscript dating from around 1400, composed by an anonymous master, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was rediscovered only 200 years ago, and published for the first time in 1839。 One of the earliest great stories of English literature, after Beowulf, the poem narrates the strange tale of a green knight on a green horse, who rudely interrupts the Round Table festivities one Yuletide, casting a pall of unease over the company and challenging one of their number to a wager。 The virtuous Gawain accepts, and decapitates the intruder with his own axe。 Gushing blood, the knight reclaims his head, orders Gawain to seek him out a year hence, and departs。 Next Yuletide Gawain dutifully sets forth。。。 His quest for the Green Knight involves a winter journey, a seduction scene in a dream-like castle, a dire challenge answered - and a drama of enigmatic reward disguised as psychic undoing。

I read this for school and didn’t hate it, so therefore it gets a three star。 To be honest this actually made sense and I wasn’t “bored” by the story at all。 The descriptions were a little extensive but that’s to be expected。 Random ass plot twist at the end though…

Wasn't awful but certainly wasn't great。 Bertilaks wife could've gotten the job done。 Wasn't awful but certainly wasn't great。 Bertilaks wife could've gotten the job done。 。。。more

A wonderful read。 This is a must-read for anyone who loves the medieval age。 A beautiful tale of chivalry and the vows of ancient knighthood。 Not a long book, but so worth reading。

The story itself is not that interesting, other than as a myth that helps the reader grasp the existential (and therefore ethical) framework of a society that differs greatly from their own。The lyrical aspect of this work (Audible version) was simply divine, especially when it was read in Old English, which allowed the listener to focus on the rhythmic rather than semantic aspect of the poem。

a brilliant feat of translation!

I read the original version of this so it was hard to understand at times but that's on me。 There are many elements to be explored in this book and there is something special about the age of chivalry I read the original version of this so it was hard to understand at times but that's on me。 There are many elements to be explored in this book and there is something special about the age of chivalry 。。。more

Sooo my lecturer said the romance genre was created to learn men not to treat women as slaves 😅 I must say though that like modern romances better 😂

Why was this actually unironically kind of good though

Jonathan

An excellent translation, especially in capturing the alliterative force of the original, and the strong sensuality of the story, as is only proper to a tale from medieval Britain。

The sophomores specifically enjoyed the part where Lady Bertilak seduces Gawain。 Morning 3 especially was a real crowd pleaser。 She walks in wearing next-to-nothing? How spicy!
